A crown is a cover that sits over the entire tooth used to protect teeth that are badly broken down or at risk of fracture due to decay, large fillings, cracks or root canal fillings. By covering the entire tooth, it will prevent the tooth and any fillings underneath from breaking in the future, greatly reducing the need for on going maintence and filling replacements. Depending on the way in which the tooth has broken down, your dentist may also recommend other variations such as onlays or partial crowns.
With new advancements in technologies, crowns can be tailored to precisely match your existing teeth. They may be made of porcelain, or a combination of porcelain and metal. However both options result in a life-like appearance.
Once we have prepared the tooth for the crown, detailed moulds of your teeth will be taken and sent to our lab to fabricate the prosthesis. While we wait for it to return, we will make you a temporary crown to ensure that the tooth has some protection and appearance is improved immediately.
